Review: Next in Fashion (2020)

Official Synopsis:

Designers team up to create visionary looks that work for everybody in this competition series hosted by Alexa Chung and Tan France.

Despite their massive popularity, I have always been uninterested with fashion competition genre television shows. As a fan of the latest Queer Eye reboot, I thought I would give Next in Fashion a chance though. Even though I found this show quite entertaining, Next in Fashion blunders a bit with its elimination process. Although the final winner seemed very deserving of the win, I feel like there were many designers who weren’t given a chance to fully demonstrate their talents. Tan France and Alexa Chung are quite capable and likable hosts but were seemingly out of their league in terms of judging some of the fashion challenges. Since each episode covered a different fashion theme, there were a couple episodes where it felt like contestants were evaluated more for their workmanship than for their actual designs. Of note was the episode on streetwear fashion which neither host seemed very familiar with. Even the special expert guest judge left in the middle of taping because he strongly disagreed with the hosts over their decision. Fashion is so subjective so it really makes you wonder as a viewer if the judges are truly "qualified" to make the right decision . If there is a style theme that neither host very familiar with and must rely more on judging workmanship, then the more important opinion of an expert judge can easily drowned out, which is what happened on this show. Even though they decided not to eliminate anyone on that episode, the flaws of the competition were exposed. Despite the flaws with the overall competition, it was still a very interesting show with many talented designers and an epic finale episode. The production value is high and the sets are really quite stunning. Even though it was pretty entertaining overall, I don't know if I would watch a second season though. Maybe I would just skip the awkwardness of earlier episodes and watch the Finale and before moving onto something else.
